Can I change the locks on our house when we separate?

As a general rule, neither party can change the locks on the marital home. If one is concerned about a spouse taking or destroying items from the home or if one is physically scared of the spouse, then the concerned spouse should contact an attorney immediately for further direction regarding available options. If there is legitimate fear for one's safety, the proper legal authorities should be called immediately.
